Utility Horn Audition results

At the beginning of January 1999, we held an audition for the position of Utility Horn. The position was won by Kimberly Wright, Assistant Principal Horn of the Chicago Symphony. The other finalists were Susanna Drake of the North Carolina Symphony, Lawrence Vine, princiapl horn in Winnipeg, and Chris Caudill, a Chicago freelancer, who played with the Honolulu Symphony for a year as Acting Principal Horn.

The audition had 4 rounds:

Prelims:

• Strauss: Horn Concerto No. 1 first movement exposition
• Brahms: Symphony No. 1 slow movement solo 1st horn
• Strauss: Don Quixote Var. 7 4th horn
• Mendelssohn: Scotch Symphony Scherzo 3rd horn
• Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 beginning of Allegro first horn

Semi-Finals:

• Strauss: Horn Concerto No. 1 entire 1st movement
• Brahms: Symphony No. 3 slow movement solo first horn
• Mendelssohn: Scotch Symphony Scherzo 3rd horn
• Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 low passage in first movement 4th horn
• Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 beginning of Allegro first horn

Finals:

• Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 Trio 2nd horn
• Brahms: Piano Concerto 3rd horn
• Strauss: Don Quixote: Var. 8 4th horn
• Don Juan: first calls first horn
• Ein Heldenleben: beginning first horn

Ensemble with section:

• Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 third movement trio, second horn
• Mahler: Symphony No. 1 opening duet, second horn
• Mahler: Symphony No. 10, assistant dovetailing
• Tschaikovsky: Symphony No. 5, octave passage in last movement, second horn
